John Chiara

California

American artist John Chiara's prints are made using his large-scale, custom-made photographic equipment and unconventional developing processes. While exposing a sheet of color photographic paper directly in camera, he works as an artist would in a dark room – burning, dodging and often filtering the light as it enters through the lens. The nature of John’s process creates a photograph that is as much object as it is image, due to the unmistakable evidence of the artist’s hand.
Chiara's first monograph, California, features 95 photographs and an accompanying essay by Virginia Heckert of the J. Paul Getty Museum.
