1994
South African artist Pieter Hugo's series 1994 consists of powerful portraits taken of children in Rwanda and in South Africa born after the year 1994, a date of historic significance in both countries. Pieter was drawn to photographing the first generation of Africans unburdened by direct experience of the fraught histories of apartheid and genocide in the regions.
The 1994 monograph features a translucent pink obi and an essay by South African cultural analyst Ashraf Jamal, printed on special Japanese paper.
