Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong for Los Angeles Memorial Design

In 2021, the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles created an open call to create a memorial to the victims of the 1871 Los Angeles Chinese Massacre. A proposal by Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong, in collaboration with writer Judy Chui-Hua Chung, has been chosen as of January 2023 as a finalist in this selection process, making it one of six proposals at this stage. Leong and Chung's proposal  employs the image of the banyan tree, a symbol of protection and life in the region of Sze Yup, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau, from which the majority of Asia's 19th-century immigrants to America's Pacific Coast originated.Find out more on the City of Los Angeles' website.
